The Zollverein coal mine was the most beautiful coal mine in the world. It is still, but no coal has been mined there for more than 20 years. Instead it has been converted to a permanent site for art and design and houses lots of different institutions in these areas.
Museums in Cologne
Cologne is a cultural centre on the Rhine. There are lots of unique museums here concerned with the history of the region and the city or making exhibits from various eras accessible to the public.

Aquarius Water Museum
The Styrum water tower has survived the structural changes and, instead of becoming an industrial wasteland, it is now home to a multi-media Water Museum exploring everything to do with water.
Xanten Archaeological Park
Visiting the Romans
Colonia Ulpia Traiana: in the vicinity of the Xanten of today there was once one of the largest Roman colonies. With its strategic position on the Rhine, this colony was, after Cologne, the second largest Roman town in Germania, with a population of just under 15,000 people.
Xanten Archaeological Park shows you what Roman life was like in the colony of Ulpia Traiana. The remains of the town are to be found over an extensive area. The recently opened Roman Museum houses 2,500 exhibits of Roman life, and special events are held on weekends from May to September.
Düsseldorf Old Town
It is the lovely Old Town with its charming combination of culture, nightlife and shopping which makes the federal capital Düsseldorf so attractive. Here there is (almost) nothing more to wish for.
Alpine Centre in Bottrop
The pleasures of skiing all year round
The Ruhr district has had its own ski resort since 2001 and it is open all year round. The Alpine Centre in Bottrop, with the longest skiing hall in the world, invites you to come and enjoy winter sport.
Moyland Castle
Situated in the midst of beautiful gardens, Moyland Castle is a great place to visit on a sunny afternoon. But in wet weather the permanent exhibition and special shows are also there to be admired inside the building.
Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral)
The mighty Cologne Cathedral stands right next to Cologne's main railway station and can look back on a long history. The current building is more than 750 years old, but even before that time there were places of worship here.
