With the removal of heavy industry from the Rhine, the area between the harbour and the Brücke der Solidarität can in future be used as a residential and leisure area. The first part of the building programme has already been completed. In future more areas for both living and working are to be built, as well as plenty of food outlets.

The grand opening of the Mercatorhalle Duisburg, which is located inside the CityPalais, has taken place at the 21 April 2007. The Mercatorhalle gives place to any kinds of events like conventions, seminars, and concerts.

Currently, the Mercatorhalle is closed. For scheduled events shortly alternative dates or venues to be announced.

A few kilometres away from the centre of Duisburg, in the immediate vicinity of the Wedau sports facility lies the largest recreational area in Greater Duisburg. The six lakes in the woodland with paths along their banks, boats for hire and a harbour for model boats make this area, for water sports or simply for leisure, a favourite spot both for sportsmen and tourists.
